Regardless of how hard I strive to be a positive thinker, I'll admit at times I seem to take on the "glass is half empty" perspective on life.
Usually, when I catch myself thinking negatively, it all stems back to the fact that I'm an over-thinker. I am horribly guilty of letting small, meaningless things consume me, while overlooking the "bigger picture". At times, this is a good trait to have. Other times, not so much.
When you overthink or overanalyze, you allow many thoughts that would have never came into place before hand, reside in your brain. You create a sort of build up of "explainations" or "stories" to try to discover why something is one way or why it should be another, and none of that is ever necessary, nor true. When you have this extra clump of unneeded thoughts, it weighs you down. Physically and mentally. You start to lose focus on things that actually need your focus, and you fall into a trap.
The trap is a little thing called stress.
I am sure I'm not the only one who has been guilty of overthinking. It hides in all of us. As humans, we are constantly seeking the approval of others. We want to make a good reputation, we want to ace a test, we want to make sure everything goes well when going out with friends. We want to fulfill our lifelong goals, maybe get married, have a good career, house, etc. so we think up how we can make that happen.
We all have a picture in our mind of how things are supposed to be, and that essentially, is overthinking.
Overthinking is overanalyzing. Overanalyzing is making the small things larger than they seem. Making things larger/more catastrophic then they seem is negative thinking. Negative thinking is stressful.
The cure? Don't have expectations. Less expectations=more surprises=happier you! :)
When you have a picture in your mind of how something should be, chances are you will become dissapointed when reality is faced and it is not the same as what you played up in your head. When you don't know what's coming, everything seems positive!

Look at the bigger picture. Look at what is going well for you. Focus on reality, not a story played up in your head that you percieve will make a situation better but ends up making it worse. Get rid of the stress! Expect nothing.. or, as my mom has always said, "go with the flow and enjoy the ride!"
I'll be right there with you, striving to do the same! Be a positive thinker with me! :)
